What do Czechs drink and eat? What should you try while in the Czech Republic?
Czech food consists mostly of meat and potatoes. It is a must to try guláš (gulash) with knedliky (dumplings). A personal favorite of Hilary's is smažený sýr (fried cheese) with tartarká omáčka (tartar sauce).
As for drink, Czechs love their beer (and it is the best in the world). Gambrinus, Plzen, Kozel, Staropramen, Bernard and Budvar are just a few of the more popular brews. Being cheaper than water, beer is the preferred drink.
Other recommended Czech specialties that go great with beer are pickled cheese (nakladní hermelín), picked sausage (utopenec).
For something a bit stronger, you can try Slivovice, a hard (and nasty tasting) alcohol made from plums. Becherovka is another hard Czech drink that many locals consider an elixir for most general ailments.
Water in the Czech Republic does not come free in restaurants; it always needs to be ordered.
And remember, be safe and do not drink and drive!!
